What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is caused by an uncontrolled proliferation of abnormal cells, leading to the development of a malignant tumour.

While the majority of prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas, there are a number of less common types of prostate cancers in Singapore, including small cell carcinomas, neuroendocrine tumours and sarcomas.

Signs and Symptoms

While most patients do not show any symptoms until the disease is advanced, there are a number of symptoms that may hint towards a diagnosis of prostate cancer. They are as follows:

Pain when urinating

Frequent urination

Blood in urine or semen

Weak urine flow or trouble with urination

Backache and pelvic pain

Loss of appetite and weight

Feeling weak and tired

Weakness and numbness of feet and legs

Prostate Cancer Staging

Prostate cancer staging in Singapore enables the doctor to determine the stage and extent of cancer, which guides them to plan the ideal treatment strategy.

There are four stages of prostate cancer: Stages I-IV.

Stage I

Stage I cancer indicates that the cancer has not spread beyond the prostate with an invasion of only one side of the gland or even less than that.

Stage II

Stage II refers to cancer that is confined to the prostate, invading one or both sides of the prostate.

Stage III

Stage III depicts that the cancer is locally advanced and is likely to grow and spread further.

Stage IV

Stage IV indicates the cancer has spread beyond the gland with a probable invasion of adjacent organs and structures.

Reliable and Accurate Prostate Cancer Testing in Singapore

The diagnosis of prostate cancer can be confirmed by a series of investigations along with a detailed medical history and physical examination.

Digital Rectal Examination (DRE)

DRE involves the insertion of the doctor’s gloved and lubricated finger into the rectum for the assessment of abnormalities.

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)

This is a blood test that is used to predict the risk of prostate cancer and to monitor patients for prostate cancer.

Transabdominal
Ultrasound of the Prostate

This imaging test is typically used to measure the size of the prostate. It is not routinely used for diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

This scan is used for two purposes. Firstly, to detect suspicious-looking details & to determine the extent of the spread of the cancer.

Importance of Early Detection and Treatment of Prostate Cancer

Early detection and treatment are essential as most early-stage prostate cancers are curable and are associated with good outcomes.

Prostate cancer treatment in Singapore will depend on many factors, including the patient’s condition as well as the stage and extent of cancer, resulting in favourable cure rates, especially for early-stage cancers.

Advanced prostate cancer might also be associated with complications such as pain, urinary incontinence, urinary tract obstruction, erectile dysfunction, bone fractures, and many more.

A consultation with an experienced prostate specialist in Singapore, like Dr Terence Lim, will help you to reduce the impact of such complications and have an enhanced quality of life.
